Tips For Cleaning Out Your Closet

closet clean out

Are you having trouble finding things in your cluttered closet? Do you have items that are no longer in style or that you never seem to want to wear? Is your closet so full that you have trouble even getting the door to close? If any of these are true for you, it sounds like it may be time for a closet clean out. Here are a few tried and true tips that can help.

Shop Your Closet

Approach your closet as if you were shopping a rack in a store. Evaluate each item, one by one, and determine if you would want to purchase it. Discard anything that’s stained, torn, or obviously worn. The same goes for any broken shoes or accessories. Start a donation bin for any of the items that are still in good condition, but just aren’t things you find yourself gravitating towards in the morning. If there are things that are so sentimental that you can’t bear to part with them, it’s ok to keep them. Just store them in another closet or the attic in a labeled box or bin.

Keep it Seasonal

If you still don’t seem to have enough room, once you’ve removed your discards and donations, there may be another solution. Consider keeping only clothes for the current season in your closet. Store the others in moth-proof containers in another location. It’s probably a good idea, though, to hang onto a few off-season items (like a swimsuit or sweater) in case you find yourself needing them.

Be Strategic

Once you’ve dealt with the contents of your closet, it’s time to figure out how you’ll store them. Assess what you have the most of and plan your storage organizers accordingly, making appropriate room for coats, shoes, and accessories. There are some fancy closet systems available if you want to go all out. But there are also a lot of affordable options to meet your needs. Try to maximize your storage by hanging hooks on the back of the door, adding stacking shelves, and using drawer organizers.

Organizing your closet is a daunting task, but it’s worth it!
