Attempting to enjoy all the things there are to do and see during the summer can put quite the strain on any family’s budget. But not every warm-weather experience has to be expensive. Here are a few of our favorite free attractions in Wichita Falls.
The Kemp Center for the Arts
Built in 1917 as a public library, The Kemp was leased to The Arts Council in 1998 for use as an arts and cultural center. After being restored to its former glory, it now houses five gallery exhibit spaces, three classrooms, and an auditorium. The exhibits feature artists of all kinds and experience levels. Outside you can explore The Sculpture Garden, which features the work of artists from all over the country. During the summer there’s also a free interactive kids’ exhibit, ArtZeum. Admission is free to all exhibits.
Located in the center of the city, Lucy Park is a 178-acre park situated in a bend of the Wichita River. The park has a pond that’s full of waterfowl year round. There’s also a 1.7-mile hiking and biking trail, swimming pool, playground, picnic area, and sports facilities. A favorite activity is to take the swinging bridge across the Big Wichita River and hike the mile or so to The Falls. Constructed in 1987 to replace the city’s original falls (also its namesake), the 54-foot man-made waterfall provides a wonderful backdrop for some fun family selfies. The park’s hiking trails are also part of a larger trail system that runs city wide.

Downtown Wichita Falls Farmers Market
This local favorite pays tribute to the major role that agriculture has played in the area’s development. Housed in a replica of the famed Union Passenger Station, the Downtown Wichita Falls Farmers Market features produce from farmers all across North Central Texas, as well as many community events. Check out their event calendar for more details. Vendors include bakers, farmers, artisans, and more. The market is open year round, though its hours vary according to the season.
There are plenty of places in Wichita Falls to find good, free fun before the summer comes to a close. Just make sure you do it fast! Fall will be here before you know it.
